Pygeum Africanum Bark Extract Oil Introduction
Pygeum Africanum, also known as the African pygeum, is widely distributed in Africa, occurring in the mountainous regions of central and southern Africa, as well as the islands of Bioko, São-Tomé and Grande Comore. The bark is black to brown, corrugated or cracked, scaly, and cracked into a characteristic rectangular pattern.
Pygeum africanum is a large evergreen tree found in central and southern Africa. Extracts from the pygeum bark contain several compounds that are believed to contribute to prostate health. Pygeum extract has been used in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia in France, Germany and Austria for more than 40 years. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a non-malignant enlargement of the prostate that occurs in most men over the age of 60 and can cause frequent urination and nocturia.

Active ingredient
The active ingredient of the Pygeum extract includes phytosterols (for example, β-sitosterol) which has an anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins in the prostate. Pygeum also contains pentacyclic triterpenes (bears) having anti-edema properties. AHA and oleanolic acid, and ferulic acid esters (n-docosanol and behenyl alcohol) reduce prolactin levels and prevent the accumulation of cholesterol in the prostate. Prolactin is said to increase prostate uptake of testosterone and cholesterol increases the binding site of dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Action mechanism
Although the exact mechanism of action of Pygeum is unclear, in animal models, Pygeum has been shown to regulate bladder contractility by reducing bladder sensitivity to electrical stimulation, phenylephrine, adenosine triphosphate, and carbachol. Pygeum also has anti-inflammatory activity by reducing the production of leukotrienes and other 5-lipoxygenase metabolites (lower concentrations of Pygeum can be used to reduce 5-lipoxygenase metabolites when first dissolved in DSMO) .
In addition, Pygeum inhibits the production of fibroblasts, increases the secretion of adrenal androgens, and restores the secretory activity of the prostate and urinary tract epithelium.

Determination of β-Sitosterol in Pygeum Bark Extract by HPLC:
1. Standard solution preparation
Weigh accurately a β-Sitosterol15.0mg standard (Sigma company U.S.A.) in 25ml volumetric flask, and add solution of Methanol to mark.
2. Sample solution preparation
Weigh accurately 100mg sample in 25ml volumetric flask, then add 20ml solution of Methanol to mark and preparation.
3. Test conditions
Column: C8 (150 mm×4.6 mm, 5μm)
Mobile phase: Methanol : 0.1% H3PO4 Solution (98∶2, v/v)
Flow rate: 1.0 mL/min,
Detection wavelength: 210 nm
Column Temperature: 25 ℃.
4. Process
Separately inject equal volumes (about 20 uL) of the Standard solution and the Sample solution into the chromatograph, record the chromatograms, and measure the responses for the major peaks.

A2 W1
In which is A1 the assay sample peak area, A2 is the standard peak area, W1 is the concentration of assay sample. W2 is the concentration of standard.
Main Functions
1. It can inhibit benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostate cancer.
2. It protects bladder smooth muscle from cellular damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion.
3. It can restore the secretion activity of the prostate epithelium.
4. It can identify bladder neck and urethral obstruction, and significantly improve urinary system symptoms and flow indicators.
5. It can be used to improve incontinence, urinary retention, polyuria or frequent urination, and difficulty urinating.
