What is Silymarin?
Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn is a plant of the genus Silybum in the Compositae family, which is native to southern Europe and North Africa. Silymarin is a natural active substance extracted from the dried fruit of Silybum marianum. The main components are silybin, isosilybin, silydianin and silybin. silychristin), silybin and isosilybin are two pairs of corresponding isomers. Among them, silybin has the highest content, accounting for 60% to 70%, and has the strongest activity. Silymarin extract is light yellow to brownish-yellow powder, insoluble in water and chloroform, but easily soluble in solvents such as methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, acetone, etc.

1. Liver protection
Silymarin mainly eliminates free radicals through anti-lipid peroxidation, increases the level of glutathione (G-SH) in the liver, and plays a hepatoprotective effect.
2. Anti-cancer activity
Silymarin can be used to treat breast cancer, bladder cancer, oral cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, etc. Silymarin and silibinin regulate the imbalance of cell survival and apoptosis by interfering with cell cycle regulation and proteins involved in cell apoptosis.
3. Hypoglycemic effect
Increased glucose and fatty acid levels in diabetic patients lead to increased ROS, accompanied by insulin resistance and pancreatic J3 cell dysfunction, and silymarin can significantly improve the above symptoms.
4. Treatment of neurodegenerative diseases
Silymarin can inhibit the activation of MAO glial cells, stimulate the secretion of peroxide products, promote ribosomal RNA synthesis, alleviate neuronal oxidative damage, and treat Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
5. Immune regulation
Silymarin can significantly inhibit the proliferation of CD4+ cells and the production of IL 2 and IFN 7, especially the NF KB activation/translocation pathway, showing the potential for immunoregulation; it can also inhibit the production of TNF a, IL 10, TNF B1, PGE2 and NO. Shows anti-inflammatory effects.
Is silymarin safe?
The silymarin drug is safe and will not cause gastrointestinal disorders, allergic reactions, urticaria, nausea, headache, joint pain, skin itching, diarrhea, and other adverse reactions after taking it. There are many types of silymarin-related hepatoprotective drugs, such as Lijialong in Germany, Silybum marianum extract capsules in the United States, Yiganling, Gantai capsules, and silibinin meglumine tablets in China, all of which are widely used in clinical practice.
