African pygeum extract-Tongniaoling is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, which may be due to the suppression of cell proliferation mediated by certain growth factors.
As early as 1925, Reischauer first described the initial damage of benign prostatic hyperplasia that occurred in the proximal end of the urethra in the form of fibromuscular muscles, that is, the appearance of fibrous basal nodules. Such nodules can induce glandular cells to grow inward and produce a factor to stimulate epithelial growth. In benign prostatic hyperplasia, the volume of the mesenchyme is more obvious than that of the epithelium, suggesting that the mesenchyme plays an important role in the occurrence of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and the proportion of epithelial mesenchymal cells is the determinant of epithelial cell proliferation. Therefore, the balance of epithelial and interstitial is an important regulator of prostate growth and development.
According to research, pygeum extract can effectively increase the maximum urine flow rate and significantly reduce the residual urine output. The resulting compensatory thickening is related to slowing down the fibrosis process of the bladder wall and reducing the high sensitivity of the bladder detrusor.
